Arbitration Profile
Andrew Moran QC is an English Barrister and Queens Counsel with nearly 34 years experience (17 years in silk) in civil and commercial litigation and arbitration, involving an extremely wide range of subjects and disciplines in various jurisdictions. He has been a holder of part-time judicial office, latterly as a Deputy High Court Judge in England and Wales for nearly 20 years and more recently has accepted appointments as an arbitrator in a range of commercial and maritime disputes. He has made literally hundreds of reasoned decisions and awards of all types of remedy during that time. His qualifications to act as an arbitrator include:
- Versatility and ability to handle the most complex of disputes, as advocate, judge and arbitrator, in many diverse areas including the loss of, and damage to vessels at sea, charterparty disputes, ship sale and construction disputes and generally, all forms of contractual dispute.
- He is unique in his practical experience of maritime matters in being the only practising English QC, Arbitrator and Deputy High Court Judge, who has served in both the Royal and Merchant Navy as a Deck Officer.
- Has the considerable advantage of having had a direct hands-on involvement in shipping and consequently an easy understanding of how accidents, delays, cargo loss and damage, collisions and pollution may occur.
- His experience of commercial dispute resolution is not confined solely to the maritime environment and he is able to bring to bear, from and across the range of disciplines in which he is able to operate, the wide technical, practical and legal knowledge he has acquired in many different fields.
- He has a long experience of the operation of financial and commodity markets in the City of London and elsewhere.
- Sitting as a Deemster (a High Court Judge in the Isle of Man) he has presided over complex commercial and banking litigation. In the same jurisdiction, he sits in Admiralty matters. He was the trial Judge in the case concerning the loss (with all hands) of the vessel Solway Harvester.
- He is currently appointed as Arbitrator in a number of Maritime and other Arbitrations in London and Singapore.
- He is not confined to UK and London appointments and accepts appointments in most jurisdictions. He has had a long connection with and commitment to the Far East and has been an Arbitrator on the panel of the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration for some years. He has advised and acted on instructions from Singapore and Hong Kong based solicitors for several years. Andrew has a base in Singapore and spends a significant amount of time there each year allowing him to provide a very cost-effective service as an Arbitrator.
