David Martin-Clark

David spent the greater part of his commercial career at the firm of Thomas Miller in the City of London. Thomas Miller are the leading providers of management services to mutual insurance associations and captive insurance companies, spanning both the shipping and transport industries and the English professions, such as solicitors and barristers. Their most prominent businesses are the management of the United Kingdom P & I Club, the UK Defence Club and the TT (Through Transport) Club.

From his time in Millers, David gained wide experience in the shipping and transport and related insurance industries. He served as Chief Executive and then Chairman of the Miller group and was a Director of its regional subsidiaries in the United States, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore. He was resident in Hong Kong for some years and founded there the Miller group holding company for Asia Pacific.

Since his retirement from Millers, David has developed a practice as a maritime arbitrator, commercial disputes mediator and shipping and insurance consultant.

As an arbitrator, he is a supporting member of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association, a member of the German and Canadian Maritime Arbitrators Associations and a panellist of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre. He has also acted as Chairman of an International Chamber of Commerce arbitration tribunal. As a mediator, he is CEDR accredited and a member of the ACI (A Commercial Initiative) panel. His consultancy work includes involvement in a number of European Commission research projects.

Academically, he gained a first-class honours degree in Jurisprudence from Magdalen College, Oxford. He teaches at post-graduate level at University College London and other universities. In addition, he is the founder and editor of a legal case notes website, @www.onlinedmc.co.uk.

In his practice David will be available for arbitrator and mediator appointments and will undertake, in addition, general commercial advisory work, specialising in the shipping, transport and insurance – particularly mutual insurance – fields.

A "Leading Set"

Legal 500 - 'London Bar Overview'

"Although smaller than its competitors …, this set is nonetheless a genuine force. It has some “very successful players in shipping” at all levels who undertake a rich diet of both wet and dry work… There is, moreover, additional expertise in relation to the international and domestic sale of goods and commodities, as well as insurance matters…"
