Experience
Prior to becoming a tenant at Chambers, Henry Ellis undertook pupillage at 7 King's Bench Walk. During pupillage Henry assisted leading and junior counsel in advising, settling pleadings and preparing for hearings, both interlocutory and final. He experienced a broad range of commercial disputes, but primarily worked on cases related to insurance, reinsurance and shipping.
Arbitration:
During pupillage Henry assisted in preparing submissions for international arbitrations in a range of insurance, reinsurance, shipping and commodities disputes giving him experience of arbitration under the both LMAA and ICC Rules.
Commercial Litigation:
During pupillage, Henry assisted on cases across a broad range of commercial areas encompassing insurance, reinsurance and shipping, including assisting in preparing for trial in the Commercial Court.
Many of these cases involved international elements, and he has experience of conflicts of law issues in both the EU and non-EU context.
Dry Shipping and Commodities:
During pupillage, Henry assisted in a wide-range of dry shipping disputes including:
Charterparty and commodity disputes - disputes arising under both voyage and time charters, including off-hire, laytime and demurrage and bunker disputes and disputes involving contracts of affreightment.
Freight forwarding agreements - a dispute arising under the 1992 ISDA Master Agreement
Insurance and Reinsurance:
During pupillage Henry gained experience in a wide range of insurance (marine and non-marine) and reinsurance disputes. This included:
Insurance (non-marine) disputes - disputes involving coverage and notification issues under professional indemnity policies as well as disputes involving avoidance of policies for material non-disclosure and misrepresentation.
Insurance (marine) disputes - a dispute involving alleged constructive total loss of goods due to piracy in the Gulf of Aden; a dispute involving avoidance for material non-disclosure following the actual total loss of a vessel.
Reinsurance disputes - a dispute centred on the applicability of ‘follow-the-settlements' clauses; and disputes involving avoidance for misrepresentation.
Salvage, Collision & Admiralty
During pupillage he gained experience of Salvage, Collision & Admiralty work and accepts instructions in this core area of Chambers' practice.
Shipbuilding:
Henry has recently assisted in drafting defence submissions in a multi-million dollar shipbuilding dispute under the LMAA Rules.
