Since joining Stone Chambers as a tenant in December 2010, Liisa has worked on a broad range of commercial matters for a wide-range of clients.
Before coming to the Bar Liisa spent 2 1/2 years at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. During her time at Freshfields she gained experience in the Corporate, Finance and Litigation Departments and spent time on secondment to ExxonMobil.
Commercial Litigation:
Liisa has assisted on cases across a broad range of commercial areas encompassing insurance, reinsurance, shipping, competition, banking and finance including the following:
- Liisa is instructed in ongoing proceedings in the Commercial Court concerning the enforcement of an arbitration award worth over £150 million against a European State. These proceedings raise (among other things) issues concerning State immunity and interest payments made pursuant to Sovereign bonds (as junior to Philip Riches).
- Liisa is instructed as sole Counsel in ongoing proceedings concerning the asset sale of a business which raises issues concerning alleged misrepresentations and breaches of contract.
Liisa has also been instructed to advise on:
- Professional negligence
- Consumer credit
- Bailment (in the context of warehousing and shipping)
- Whether an exclusive purchasing agreement concerning credit risk data infringes competition laws
Many of the cases Liisa has worked on have involved international elements, and she has experience of conflicts of law issues in both the EU and non-EU context. This experience has included a question concerning conflicting arbitration and jurisdiction clauses as well as a dispute about the jurisdiction of the English courts to grant a freezing injunction.
Arbitration
Liisa has assisted in preparing submissions for international arbitrations in a range of general commercial, insurance and shipping disputes. She has experience of the LMAA Rules, the LCIA Arbitration Rules and the New York Convention.
Liisa also has experience of the relationship between arbitration and the courts.
- Liisa is instructed in an ongoing LCIA arbitration of issues relating to FX derivatives (the ISDA Master Agreement). These proceedings raise issues concerning (among other things) misrepresentation, estoppel and the law of India regulating derivatives (as junior Counsel to Raymond Cox QC of Fountain Court).
- She has been instructed as junior Counsel to Timothy Hill QC in proceedings to challenge and appeal and arbitration award under sections 68 and 69 of the Arbitration Act 1996.
- Liisa is currently instructed as junior Counsel to Philip Riches in proceedings to enforce an arbitration award worth over £150 million.
Insurance and Reinsurance
Liisa has gained experience in a wide-range of insurance (marine and non-marine) and reinsurance disputes.
Before joining Stone Chambers Liisa underwent pupillage at 7 King’s Bench Walk, during which time she gained extensive experience of insurance matters both marine and non-marine. Furthermore, having spent time on secondment in-house at an international group P&I Club Liisa has a good understanding of the commercial background to insurance disputes.
Insurance (non-marine):
- Disputes involving coverage issue, notification issues, the scope of an insurance broker’s authority and the avoidance of policies for material non-disclosure and misrepresentation.
- Liisa has assisted in matters arising within the context of insurance covering various types of risk including a professional indemnity policy, a crime policy and a policy covering business interruption.
Insurance (marine):
- Instructed as junior Counsel to Timothy Hill QC on behalf of insurers in ongoing proceedings in the Commercial Court.
- Assisted in advising on the wording of a Marine Cargo Insurance Policy.
Banking and Finance
- Liisa is currently instructed in an ongoing LCIA arbitration of issues relating to FX derivatives (the ISDA Master Agreement). These proceedings raise issues concerning (among other things) misrepresentation, estoppel and the law of India regulating derivatives (as junior Counsel to Raymond Cox QC of Fountain Court).
- Acted as junior Counsel in a freezing injunction application in respect of interest payments under sovereign bonds.
- Liisa has been instructed to advise on and appear as sole Counsel in County Court proceedings concerning consumer credit and hire purchase agreements.
- Liisa also has experience in all aspects of possession proceedings and mortgage disputes.
Shipping & Commodities
Liisa has acted as sole and junior Counsel in shipping and commodities disputes including:
- Charterparty disputes arising under both voyage and time charters.
- Hire claims.
- Entitlement to demurrage.
- Damaged cargo.
- Breaches of speed and consumption warranties.
- Entitlement to terminate a charterparty in circumstances where it was alleged that the chartered vessel was not seaworthy.
- Whether or not the Hague-Visby Rules concerning making a vessel seaworthy and fit and safe for reception and carriage of goods had been incorporated into a charterparty.
- How to quantify compensation due when a vessel is delivered with less than the minimum quantity of bunkers required pursuant to the terms of the Charterparty.
- Disputes concerning the payment of installments under shipbuilding contracts and the entitlement to terminate.
- Junior Counsel to Vasanti Selvaratnam QC, drafting pleadings in an arbitration concerning the manner in which damages for failure to serve contractual notices of re-delivery are to be assessed.
- Junior Counsel to Timothy Hill QC in proceedings to challenge and appeal an LMAA arbitration award under sections 68 and 69 of the Arbitration Act 1996.
