Seminar: An Introduction to Bills of Lading
Ravi Aswani
Bills of lading are documents extensively used in commerce; they take a number of forms and there are various statutory provisions, international conventions, and important cases which practitioners need to be aware of. This talk is an overview of some of the more important legal and practical considerations which arise in relation to bills of lading, including: functions of bills of lading, parties to bills of lading and transfers of their rights and liabilities, types of bills of lading, identification of any applicable charterparty or statutory provision / international convention, and identification of the contractual carrier.
The talk should be of particular interest to trainees and solicitors new to shipping law, as well as of some general interest to more experienced shipping lawyers.
