This talk looks at Lord Hoffmann's leading speeches in the House of Lords and Privy Council on construction of contracts, including implied terms. Cases to be covered include:

- A-G of Belize v Belize Telecom [2009] 1 WLR 1988 - implied terms - 'gaps' in contract.
- ICS v West Bromwich BS [1998] 1 WLR 896 - interpretation - incorrect syntax / language used - surrounding circumstances evidence.
- The Starsin [2004] 1 AC 715 - interpretation of negotiable documents.
